This article titled No Place like Home, written by Mr. Schwab, published Oct 2012 in PN Magazine proposes a Life span home building/ remodeling incentive idea that could save home owners and ultimately the country, billions of dolars in long term health care costs. This article has been reviewed by the private sector as well as state and local governments. In 2014 the IRS then did their own study under the Affordable Care Act and determined that for the cost of 1 person sent to a nursing home they could service 3 people who stayed at home for the same cost.
This Universal Design home was designed by Mr. Schwab and completed in 2008 Bristal CT.

Universal Designed "Smart"Homes,for the 21stCentury.
Smart features of the homes include energy efficient design and sustainable building practices. The home plans are also specified with Sustainable building products as well as clean indoor air products. FEMA has given us permission to include their engineered safe-room drawings if you are interested in including one. The plans range in size from 654 sq.ft. to 4850 sq.ft. Several are designed in the a variety of styles. Also included in the book are double-master plans, empty nester plans and duplexes. You have the option of all foundation types. Six inch stud walls or concrete block framing is standard. ICF, SIPS or other (steel) exterior framing types are available upon request. more than a simple list of Universal Design features. It is a what and why explanation of these features. This is included in an effort to be of use to designers, homebuilders, and home remodel and addition builders, students andhomeowners alike. A year lived longer in your own home can easily offset the additional costs of the Universal Design Smart Home, when compared to traditional long term housing options. You may save $60,000-$100,000 per year or more as opposed to moving to assisted living or nursing home care. If you have long term care insurance those benefits will endure longer. Your home will probably increase in resale value as 76 million baby boomers seek these features as they age. As we move into the 21st Century the demands on our homes in terms of security, safety, energy efficiency and independent living will continue to be of growing importance. Enjoy independent and sustainable living in your Universal Designed "Smart" Home.
